Kirkjubol is situated by road nr. 68 leading north to Strandir, 99 km north of road nr. 1 by Staðarskáli (Brú) in Hrutafjordur and 12 km south of Holmavik. The farm is centrally located in Strandir and thus a desirable dwelling place, both for those who wish to stop on their way to the West Fjords and for those preferring to explore Strandir and environs. It is very efficient to stay at Kirkjubol for a few days and take short trips north into the Arnes district to see the wonders of Trekyllisvik, take a jaunt over Steingrimsfjordur Heath to enjoy the beautiful Isafjardardjup fjord, roam around beyond Kaldalon, and dart over the heath roads on day trips to Dalir and the Reykholar district. An Important Manorial Estate Kirkjubol is an historically significant farm, an ecclesiastical centre and parliament meeting place of the past as well as an important manor farm. Until after 1600 a church was located there, and the farm bears the same name as the church. The farm is not large, but its fields are rich and fertile. A great deal of driftwood can be found there, and eider birds lay their eggs there as well. Early in the twentieth century, men put out their boats from Kirkjubol as they did from other farms in the district. Many drew their boats ashore there, as the lumpfish waters offshore from Kirkjubol were considered very good. Fishermen rowed from Birgistangi, where the natives of the Tungusveit area had a fold built of stone for the sheep that had spent the summer in the mountains. Kirkjubol sheepfold, a wooden structure built in 1971, stands quite close to the farm.
The Hosts Siglufjordur native Ester Sigfusdottir and her husband, Jon Jonsson, a folklorist born and raised in Strandir, purchased Kirkjubol and moved there in the autumn of 2000 with their four children. Before that time, the same family had lived in Kirkjubol for 157 years. Accompanying Jon and Ester on their move from the capital city of Reykjavik, were Jon’s company, Sogusmidjan, and Ester’s dream of running a family-friendly guesthouse in the country.
