Hiking In Strandir, one has the opportunity to become intimate with Nature, to stroll along marked and unmarked hiking trails with a compass and a snack. Outdoorsmen have plenty of space to be alone with their thoughts and drink in the limitless peace and quiet. A map showing selected hiking trails in Strandir is available at Information Centres and at better tourist stops around the country. Bird Life On the beach it is possible to find many things besides driftwood and shells. The bird life in Strandir is diverse, and the experience of finding a nest can be a very special one for children. In spring, eider birds lay their eggs in the fields surrounding Kirkjubol, and visitors must walk about carefully. Arctic terns and black guillemots nest there also and are entertaining to watch. Seals on the Rocks In the autumn one can sometimes see seals sunning themselves on the skerries offshore from Kirkjubol. They are very curious and pay close attention to the activities of the people on shore. Sometimes they can be seen to follow people who are taking a stroll along the beach. Berry picking Berry picking is an activity that is perfectly suited to families. Excellent berry fields can be found all over the area, including Thidriksvalladalur near Holmavik. Many visitors make their way to Strandir for weekend trips in the autumn, to pick berries and enjoy life. Herding and corralling of sheep Sheep herding is one of the highlights of farm life in the autumn. Kirkjubol’s sheepfold is situated on the farm, and sheep are gathered there every autumn. Those interested in seeing the spectacle should be able to attend, and an annual sheep-herding ball is held at Laugarholl in Bjarnarfjordur in the fall.
