... is quite an experience. The snow, of course, melts later in Strandir than at more southerly latitudes, and natives are the beneficiaries of many halcyon days during the spring, when there is still enough snow for cross-country skiing in the mountain wilderness without the danger of impending storm or gale force winds. Snowmobilers also head north in April and May in search of outdoor recreation. The birds of Steingrimsfjordur ... ... are a delightful sight during the spring. The Arctic tern returns from its winter dwelling place in Africa around May 10. By that time the raven is finished laying her eggs. Bird-watchers have plenty to do in Strandir. Kirkjubol has a small eider nesting ground and Arctic terns and black guillemots have laid eggs there as well. When the tern comes back ... ... to Iceland, it is time for lambing in Strandir. The lambs love to frolic in the fields once the farmers have let them outdoors in late May. Kirkjubol is no longer a working farm, but the district is home to numerous sheep farmers.
